What is Monitor Clouding?
Clouding is the appearance of uneven, patchy bright zones across a dark screen โ most visible on a solid black or near-black image. It is caused by the LCD backlight leaking through unevenly around the panel, creating a cloud-like blotchy pattern.
Clouding differs from backlight bleed, which appears as bright edges and corners. Clouding manifests as diffuse bright patches spread across the middle of the screen. It is most common on VA panels, which have excellent on-axis contrast but are susceptible to this failure mode, particularly in the early weeks of use.
How to Use the Clouding Test
Step 1 โ Darken your room. Clouding is invisible in daylight. Close blinds and dim overhead lights before testing.
Step 2 โ Launch the test and display a solid black screen. Press Launch Test, navigate to the pure black pattern, and press F for fullscreen.
Step 3 โ Let your eyes adjust. Wait 10โ15 seconds for your vision to adjust to the dark screen.
Step 4 โ Look for patchy bright areas away from the edges. Edge brightness is backlight bleed; diffuse patches in the middle zone are clouding. Note whether the patches are consistent or shift during the session.
Clouding Severity Guide
| Appearance | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Uniform black with faint edge glow only | Normal โ no clouding present |
| 1โ2 faint patches, invisible in content | Mild โ acceptable for most use |
| Multiple visible patches on black | Moderate โ distracting in dark scenes |
| Heavy patchy brightness across screen | Severe โ return or replace if under warranty |
Does Clouding Go Away?
Mild clouding on VA panels often reduces over the first 100โ200 hours of use as the panel and frame settle. Applying light pressure to cloudy areas (with a microfibre cloth, not directly with fingers) sometimes redistributes backlight diffuser pressure temporarily.
Clouding that appears suddenly on an older panel or worsens over time may indicate diffuser layer damage and is not self-resolving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is clouding the same as backlight bleed? No. Backlight bleed is bright light leaking from the edges and corners of the panel โ it is caused by the backlight escaping the frame. Clouding is a diffuse blotchy brightness pattern in the middle of the screen โ it is caused by uneven backlight distribution through the diffuser layer.
Which panels get clouding? VA panels are most commonly affected. TN and IPS panels exhibit backlight bleed but less clouding. OLED panels do not cloud because each pixel is self-emissive โ there is no backlight to distribute unevenly.
Can I fix monitor clouding? Mild cases sometimes improve with use. Gentle pressure to the panel surface (do not press hard) can redistribute internal pressure. Severe clouding cannot be fixed without disassembling the panel โ not recommended. If within the return window, it is a valid defect to raise with the retailer.
